Skilling for Jobs That Don’t Exist Yet

Much of the conversation around AI focuses on what jobs may change or disappear. But history suggests a different perspective: every technology revolution creates new opportunities, new industries, and new careers.

Artificial Intelligence is no exception.

Just a few years ago, roles such as AI Adoption Manager, Responsible AI Specialist, Prompt Engineer, AI Governance Lead, and Generative AI Consultant were virtually unknown. Today, organizations are actively investing in these capabilities as they seek to turn AI’s potential into business outcomes.

The question for leaders is not whether new jobs will emerge. The question is whether our people will be prepared to seize them.

This is where skilling becomes a strategic advantage.

As Alvin Toffler famously said:

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

In the AI era, career resilience is no longer about job security. It is about skill security.

Organizations that invest in AI literacy, data literacy, critical thinking, adaptability, and continuous learning are not simply preparing employees for today’s roles. They are opening the door to opportunities that may not even exist yet.

The most forward-thinking companies understand that the talent needed for tomorrow’s jobs may already exist within their workforce. The challenge is creating the right skilling pathways to unlock that potential.

As Satya Nadella reminds us:

“Don’t be a know-it-all; be a learn-it-all.”

That mindset may be the most important skill of all.

The AI revolution will undoubtedly transform work, but its greatest impact may not be the jobs it changes. It may be the opportunities it creates.

Our responsibility as leaders is to ensure that people are ready for them. Because the true purpose of skilling is not helping people keep their jobs. It is empowering them to discover their next one.
